This page explains what happens if I become concerned about your safety or someone else's during therapy. It applies to adults and to young people aged 16โ17. You can ask me for another copy at any time.
Confidentiality and its limits
What you share in therapy is treated as confidential. There are some situations where I may need to share information without your agreement: a risk of serious harm to you or another person, a concern that a child or adult at risk is being harmed, or a legal duty. I will explain these limits before therapy begins.
How I respond to a concern
- I think carefully about what I have heard and whether action is needed.
- I may discuss the concern confidentially with my clinical supervisor, sharing only what is needed.
- Where it is safe and possible, I talk with you first and involve you in what happens next.
- If I need to share information, I share only what is relevant, only with those who need to know, such as emergency services, a GP or the appropriate safeguarding team.
- I record what I decided and why.
If you are aged 16โ17
I consider your understanding, your wishes, your circumstances and your safety. A concern does not automatically mean telling a parent or carer; I think about who needs to know and, where safe, talk with you first.
If you need help now
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999. For urgent mental health help, call NHS 111 and ask for the mental health option where available. Young people can contact Childline on 0800 1111. Email is not monitored as an emergency service.
Raising a concern
